Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
