Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
