The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
