Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
