A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation struggling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before escaping on foot.

The motive behind the attack has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Police said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a location close to the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the property supervising the implementation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, as per local media.

"It is alleged the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," authorities confirmed.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and dressed in what appeared to be a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the attack.

Key evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their location," stated a police chief.

Family and Public Reaction

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," she stated.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were ready to discuss. This is a devastating blow."

She urged the community to avoid sharing graphic images from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a South African TV network.

In addition to his work in broadcasting, Stock was engaged in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, providing VIP protection services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.

A cabinet official commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.

"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even criticized me and my actions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we ought to be," the minister added.

A party figurehead commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A industry leader expressed that "Stock was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every moment on screen. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."

In a release, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will endure".
