Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
