Fury Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism

Figures from across the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

This is a vile and vile comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from Within Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.

Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
